Oregon Coast & Crater Lake National Park Tour
Monday, August 23 The excitement begins with a morning flight from Salt Lake City to Portland, Oregon. (Flights from other cities can be arranged). We will start the tour with a river cruise and learn the history of the Columbia River Gorge and about the Lewis and Clark Expedition aboard the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler. This authentic triple-deck paddle wheeler, provides 360 degrees of breathtaking vistas of the stunning Columbia River Gorge all while learning about its formation, landmarks and natural wonders. We’ll even cruise under the Bridge of the Gods.
This afternoon you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the magnificent Columbia River Gorge at the Vista House, as we travel the Historic Columbia River Highway, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. Enjoy dinner at Multnomah Falls Lodge located at the base of the impressive Multnomah Falls. Plunging 620 feet, the falls are the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest and is as magnificent and memorable as any waterfall in the country. Overnight accommodations will be just outside of Portland at the Hampton Inn. (dinner included)
Tuesday, August 24 A short drive from Portland today puts us on Oregon’s Pacific Coast Highway, where three glorious days will gently unfold as we drive south enjoying the picturesque coastal scenery, lush evergreen forests and quaint coastal towns. Our first stop will be in Astoria, Oregon where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. We’ll visit the Astoria Column, a towering hilltop monument with murals depicting area history and offering panoramic views. We’ll also have time at the Columbia River Maritime Museum which showcases fishing, shipping and military history of the mighty Columbia River.
Seaside, Oregon, once referred to by prosperous families as the “oldest fashionable summer resort on the Oregon Coast,” has been an upper Northwest beach playground for more than 150 years. Accommodations tonight will be at the Seashore Inn on the Beach where you’ll have plenty of time to stroll the beach, walk along the beach promenade or visit the nearby galleries and boutiques in this small but popular seaside resort town. (breakfast included)
Wednesday, August 25 Located just nine miles South of Seaside is the beauty and serenity of the 3½ mile long Cannon Beach strand. It is regularly voted one of America’s Best Beaches and is famous for its haystack rock formations just beyond the shoreline. This is a photographer’s dream and we will be there in the morning for spectacular photo opportunities.
We will continue traveling South along Oregon’s dramatic coastline where almost every mile has something intriguing waiting for us. Highway 101 is never far from the pounding surf of the Pacific Ocean. From the lush rain forests, to the rocky headlands, to the towering dunes, the Oregon Coast is truly one of the world’s most scenic byways
We will make a stop along the coast in Newport where we will pay a visit to the Oregon Coast Aquarium whose mission is to create unique and engaging experiences that connect you to the Oregon coast and inspire ocean conservation. We’ll overnight at the award-winning Three Rivers Casino Resort located in the coastal town of Florence. (breakfast included)
Thursday, August 26 We’ll visit the Oregon Sand Dunes National Recreation Area, extending 50 miles from Florence to Coos Bay. Here, we will get on a dune buggy for a thrilling ride over miles of sand. (Yes, this is a popular attraction for senior tours in the area). We will continue our shoreline drive where we will have an opportunity to visit the picturesque Haceta Head Lighthouse, one of the most famous and photographed lighthouses along the entire west coast. We will continue our scenic drive and head inland and onto our destination of Ashland, Oregon. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, majestic mountains, rushing rivers, rolling foothills and dramatic landscapes, Ashland is a gorgeous little city with an arts scene as vibrant as its setting. We’ll check into the amazing Ashland Hills Hotel for a two-night stay. This relaxing hotel sits on a 14-acre site in a nature-like setting complete with tennis & pickleball courts, outdoor pool, hot tub, fitness center, spa and complimentary use of bikes to explore more the park-like setting.
Friday, August 27 No other place in America matches the dramatic beauty of Crater Lake – deep, pure and astoundingly blue. Surrounded by sheer cliffs nearly 2,000 feet high, the lake is the 7th deepest in the world and the deepest in the United States. The violent volcanic explosion that created Crater Lake, when Mount Mazama collapsed some 7,700 years ago, is so recent that the story is still told in Native American legends. The film “Mirror of Heaven” at the Visitors Center tells the whole story. We’ll enjoy the Rim Drive which is a 33-mile loop that follows the caldera rim around Crater Lake, making stops along the way for great photo opportunities. We’ll have a tasty lunch at the Crater Lake Lodge, which upholds the tradition of the great National Park Lodges.
We will return to the Ashland Hill Hotel where you’ll have more time to enjoy the hotel amenities. A nice, group farewell dinner is planned tonight. (breakfast, lunch & dinner included).
Saturday, August 28 After a relaxing morning, we will travel 20 minutes to Medford, Oregon for a lunch stop before reporting to the Medford airport for our afternoon flight home filled with wonderful memories of your trip to beautiful Oregon. (breakfast included)
