Tour Itinerary
Monday, June 3rd – Your excitement begins as you board the motorcoach for your colorful Colorado tour.
You’ll be amazed with the changing scenery along your route today. A fascinating lunch stop is planned before
we cross the border into Colorado, and then we will visit the massive park know as Colorado National
Monument. This bold, big and brilliantly colored canyon country, with its towering and mesmerizing rock
sculptures, covers 32 square miles of rugged, scenic terrain. Rim Rock Drive is one of the grandest scenic
drives in the American West and offers miles of breathtaking scenery.
Located just east of Grand Junction and in the heart of Colorado’s scenic wine country and sitting amidst 21
acres of vineyards, is the Wine Country Inn. It is here that we will spend the evening at this charming and
picturesque resort that is known for pampering their guests. (lunch included)
Tuesday, June 4th – We will continue today traveling eastbound on scenic Highway 70. As we drive the
Glenwood Canyon section of the highway, you’ll have dramatic views which have been carved by the power of
the Colorado River for over three million years. Our route will pass many ski resort communities and we’ll even
stop in Vail for lunch and stretch our legs at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Before passing through Denver
and continuing to Colorado Springs, we will drive through the Eisenhower tunnel (and under the Continental
Divide) on the famous Highway 70 and learn about the history of this expensive section of Highway.
After we check into our comfortable hotel, the Drury Inn, for our three-night stay, we are headed to the foothills
of the Rocky Mountains to visit the Flying W Ranch, a working cattle ranch since 1953. There’s an enduring
romance to the Old West and it lives on at the Flying W Ranch where cowboys still sing, and hearty western
fare is served up with a smile. There’s an inner cowboy or cowgirl in all of us, so let yours loose tonight as you
enjoy the indoor Flying W chuckwagon supper and western show. (Breakfast and dinner included.)
Wednesday, June 5th – After breakfast today, we will head to the area known as River Country. Here the
Royal Gorge was created when the Arkansas River cut its way through the countryside near what is now
knows as Cañon City. Here we will we will board the Royal Gorge Railroad for a scenic train ride along the
canyon floor. Afterwards we head to the rim of the gorge to truly appreciate more of the beauty. We’ll take the
aerial gondola for the best view. From the gondola, it’s easy to see the bridge and its remarkable engineering
and elegant design. Then you have the chance to walk over the bridge or take the gondola back over the
gorge. Today you experience what President Teddy Roosevelt described as “The trip that bankrupt the
English language!”. (Breakfast and lunch included. Light dinner offered at the hotel.)
Thursday, June 6th – We will start the day off by taking a train ride on the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes
Peak Cog Railway up the spectacular mountain that lends it name to the entire region: Pikes Peak, soaring
nearly 8,000 feet above the plains. Pikes Peaks is called America’s Mountain because the view from the
summit of that purple mountain majesty inspired the song “America the Beautiful” by Katharine Lee Bates.
Our cog railway nine-mile journey will take us from the newly renovated Manitou Springs depot to the soaring
summit of Pikes Peak. Sweeping views, waterfalls and shimmery aspen trees are a given along the way.
Bighorn sheep and yellow-bellied marmots might scamper by as narrators share stories and insights about the
railway and the landscape through which it climbs.
Midday we will enjoy lunch at the Garden of the Gods Trading Post followed by a memorable drive in the
Garden of the Gods Park. Garden of the Gods is a National Natural Landmark and is named the #1 activity in
Colorado Springs by TripAdvisor. The park has 21 miles of multi-use trails that wind through huge red
sandstone rock formations and ancient juniper trees. We’ll make a stop or two allowing for photos of towering
sandstone formations with the majestic Rocky Mountains as a backdrop. It is a photographer’s dream location.
We will wind out our day with a visit to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum. Here we will learn about the
athletes who have competed at the Summer and Winter Games. There is a series of exhibits in galleries
where you’ll see torches, medals, equipment, costumes and a Hall of Fame. You’ll take part in the Opening
Ceremony and hone your skills in the interactive training gallery. There is no other museum like this museum
and it is well worth your time. You’ll also get to see some of the training facilities where athletes across a
variety of sports have trained their bodies and minds to earn their place on Team USA.
We will wind down or day with a drive through the historical streets of Colorado Springs with our local guide.
(Breakfast and lunch included. Light dinner offered at the hotel.)
Friday, June 7th – Before leaving Colorado Springs today, we will visit the stunning campus of the United
States Air Force Academy. We will make stops at the scenic overlook, a B-52 Bomber, the Visitor Center and
also see the amazing Cadet Chapel, with its 17 futuristic glass and sliver spires soaring skyward.
Next up is more scenic driving as we leave Colorado Springs and head west to the Rocky Mountains.
Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, the Black Canyon of the
Gunnison National Park exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North
America. With two million years of work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted
this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky. Our visit to the park will allow you some amazing photo
opportunities of this impressive national park.
We’ll overnight at the Hampton Inn, located in Montrose, Colorado. (Breakfast included)
Saturday, June 8th – Today we’ll say goodbye to Colorado and make our way back to the Beehive State,
having had a week full of memorable experiences. (Breakfast included)
