Texas – The Lone Star State
featuring San Antonio, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Waco and more!
Day 1 – Wednesday, March 26th – Our morning flight will take us to the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport in the Lone Star State of Texas. Upon our arrival we will meet our local guide, Candy, for an up-close look at the highlights of Dallas. She will share with us the fascinating history of the area and we will begin at Dealey Plaza, where JFK was shot. We will also check out attractions such as Pioneer Plaza, the Dallas Arts District, and the Queen Anne style homes of Highland Park (homes of the rich & famous and those with lots of money from the oil industry).
Late this afternoon we will check into our comfortable hotel accommodations in Grapevine, the charming and family friendly city in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. This evening your tour directors will host a welcome dinner where we will get better acquainted with those in the tour group. (dinner included)
Day 2 – Thursday, March 27th – After breakfast this morning we’ll tour the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This is just one of two facilities in the United States that print paper money. From enclosed walkways, you’ll be able see the actual printing process take place which is fascinating. Their giftshop is one of a kind and worth spending a few minutes (and a few dollars) at.
You are in luck today, as we have reservations for lunch at Joe T’s famous Mexican Restaurant in Ft. Worth. Started in 1935, the restaurant has grown to be such a great success due to tasty recipes, loyal customers, and word of mouth advertising. Next up we will tour Fort Worth with our local guide and see the Water Gardens, the JFK Memorial, and stop at the Sid Richardson Collection of Western Art which includes famous works of art by Remington and Russell.
In the later afternoon it’s off to an old-fashioned cattle drive in Fort Worth, where the Old West will come to life before your eyes. Once home to cowboys, cattlemen and outlaws, today the Stockyards National Historic District is one of the most popular attractions in Texas. Day and night, visitors come to the Stockyards to get a taste of the true American West, and you will not be disappointed. We will have a private tour of the Stockyards and learn historical facts and hear timeless stories. We will be in the perfect location for the 4 pm cattle drive, after which we will have free time to stroll around the Stockyards. Perhaps you’ll want to visit the John Wayne Experience, The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, or the Stockyard Museum, but be sure to allow time to visit one of the many restaurants for a great Texas steak or BBQ. (breakfast and lunch included)
Day 3 – Friday, March 28th – After a scenic and relaxing 90-minute drive we will arrive in Waco where we will meet our local guide and start seeing the popular sights of Waco and learn of their fascinating history as well as the current happenings in this changing city due to the HGTV production of “Fixer Upper,” featuring Chip & JoAnna Gaines. You’ll see Waco’s historic Suspension Bridge, the longest single-span bridge west of the Mississippi when it was completed in 1870… a realicon of Waco history. Of course, we need to visit (and shop) at MagnoliaMarket which includes the shop, Silo Bakery, Magnolia Seed & Supply,Magnolia Press and Home Store. Jimmy Don’s Ironworks and Clint Harp Designs are a must also. If browsing the shops at the Magnolia Market not of interest to you, perhaps you’ll want to visit the nearby Dr. Pepper Museum or the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame (three great options). You’ll have pleasingly comfortable accommodations here in Waco. (breakfast included)
Day 4 – Saturday, March 29th – On our way from Waco to San Antonio, we will stop in Texas’ Hill Country region and visit the German settlement of Fredericksburg for a visit to the National Museum of the Pacific War, dedicated to teaching and preserving this chapter of U.S. history. The old-time Southwest will surround you as you take time to independently explore the quaint shops and enjoy lunch.
Spring is a magical time in Hill Country, Texas. The season brings an explosion of color and life to the area, with wildflowers blooming in full force. The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas and is one of the most iconic wildflowers in Hill Country. The bluebonnet typically blooms in March and can be seen along roadsides, in fields, and in parks throughout the area. These beautiful blue flowers are a sight to behold and are a must-see for anyone visiting Hill Country in the spring.
We will also visit a real working wildflower farm (Wild Seed Farms) which spans over 200 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Their display gardens and walking trails are surrounded by lush vineyards located on the migratory path of both butterflies and hummingbirds. You’ll love your time spent here.
We will wind down our day with our arrival in San Antono, a city rich in history, bursting with culture, and booming with modern attractions. San Antonio invites us to discover what is old and explore what is new. Our wonderful hotel, The Drury Inn, is located on the Riverwalk where the evening is yours to stroll the meticulously landscaped Riverwalk and enjoy the many shops and restaurants. (breakfast included)
Day 5 – Sunday, March 30th – Enjoy a relaxing morning in the beautiful setting on the riverwalk. Late this morning will be our first stop at the Riverwalk Center where we will enjoy lunch followed by the film, “Alamo: The Price of Freedom” on the big IMAX screen. This movie is a stirring tribute to the 189 Texans, Tejanos and settlers who defended the besieged Alamo for 13 days. At the conclusion of the film, we will visit the Alamo Mission, which will be one of the many highlights of your tour.
No visit to San Antonio would be complete without a barge ride on the river, and we have reservations this evening for this top tourist attraction. You’ll love gliding along the narrow river under the twinkling lights in the towering bald cypress trees as you learn more about this charming city. This evening you are welcome to enjoy a free and unique 24-minute art and history presentation at the nearby San Fernando Cathedral. This presentation, entitled ‘The Saga’ is a video art presentation projected on the façade of the Cathedral, and covers 7,000 square feet of light, color and visual narration. Folks come from all over the world to experience The Saga and it is something you’ll talk about for some time. What a fun day! (breakfast & light dinner included at the hotel)
The Alamo
Day 6 – Monday, March 31st – This morning is yours to relax and do as you wish. Perhaps you’ll want to meander around the Riverwalk or take a dip in the rooftop swimming pool and whirlpool. In the early afternoon we will join our local guide and visit the Mission San Jose, the second mission established by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesus in 1720. Next, we’ll explore the bustling historic Pearl District, a revitalized cultural hub full of stunning architecture, exquisite dining and eclectic shops.
We will also visit the El Mercado Marketplace where the culture of San Antonio comes alive. It is the largest Mexican Marketplace in the United States and a great location to browse for one-of-a-kind goods and to have a great meal.
Exploring the San Antonio Riverwalk after dark is a magical experience, full of dazzling lights, great food, and rich history. Each of these spots offers something unique, making your nighttime adventure along the Riverwalk truly unforgettable. So, grab a friend, your camera, and get ready to explore the best of the Riverwalk at night! (breakfast & light dinner at the hotel included)
Day 7- Tuesday, April 1st – This morning you have two great options. You can relax at the hotel and enjoy the local surroundings, or you can join others on a fascinating tour of the SAS (San Antonio Shoes) shoe factory tour. Here at one of the few remaining shoe factories in the United State, you’ll see these popular shoes being made by hand, one shoe at a time with highest attention to detail.
For those remaining at the hotel, the group and motorcoach will stop by the hotel around 11:15 to head for lunch and then to pay a visit and stroll the grounds of the beautiful Japanese Tea Gardens. Afterwards, we will report to the San Antonio airport for our nonstop flight home filled with great memories of our time in Texas. (breakfast included)
