Autumn in New York – How Lovely!
October 9th – The excitement begins this morning as we meet at the Salt Lake Airport for our nonstop flight to New York. (Please note that flight arrangements can be made for travelers departing from other cities besides Salt Lake City). Upon our arrival at the JFK airport, we will have an informative one hour drive to our comfortable hotel in the village of Tarrytown, New York, which is just east of the Hudson River and approximately 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. We will spend the night at the Doubletree by Hilton for a restful sleep.
October 10th – After breakfast at the hotel, we will begin our day of sightseeing, with our first stop at West Point, the United States Military Academy, where we will be led on a private guided tour of this remarkable institution. Highlights include the Cadet Chapel and Trophy Point, with breathtaking views of the Hudson River. This fascinating experience will leave us with greater respect for the military commanders such as: Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, George S. Patton, Douglas MacArthur and H. Norman Schwarzkoph, who all graduated from West Point.
In the afternoon we will visit Union Church of Pocantico. Who would guess this unassuming country church contains a stained-glass window by Henri Matisse, his last work of art, and nine windows by Marc Chagall. The building of the church was spearheaded by Nelson Rockefeller, in honor of his mother, Abbey Aldrich Rockefeller.
Then it is off to nearby Kykuit. This hilltop paradise was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, beginning with the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil. His business acumen made him, in his day, the richest man in America. Now an historic site on the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this extraordinary landmark has been continuously and meticulously maintained for more than 100 years. (breakfast and dinner included).
October 11 – After breakfast, we will board our comfortable motorcoach and begin our day at the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. This is one of America’s premier examples of the country palaces built by wealthy industrialists during the Gilded Age. Situated on the banks of the Hudson River, the 211-acre property includes pleasure grounds with views of the distant Catskill Mountains, formal Italian gardens and natural woodlands. We will visit a few of the main rooms in the 54-room mansion.
Today we will be treated with lunch at the CIA – Culinary Institute of America. Two ladies started the culinary school in a tiny kitchen in New Haven, Connecticut to train WW II Soldiers returning home and finding themselves without a skill or job. Soon the school burst at the seams and the ladies had to search for larger facilities. After much investigation, the ladies decided on St. Andrews-on-the-Hudson, a Jesuit novitiate, in Hyde Park in 1946. Today it is the world’s preeminent culinary institution of learning, revered around the globe. Of course, we cannot leave without savoring lunch at one of the award-winning restaurants at the CIA, followed by a short tour, conducted by a current CIA student showcasing some of the cooking and baking kitchens. We’ll hear about teaching methods used to train America’s future top chefs.
Located also in Hyde Park is the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library & Museum. Here we will visit his estate that he loved dearly and the place he considered home. The Presidential Library is fascinating and it’s here we will learn more about the only President elected to four terms. (breakfast, lunch and dinner included)
October 12th – Have your camera ready because the Adirondack Mountains are a sight to remember. We will enjoy a scenic drive and visit the summit of Prospect Mountain where we’ll have marvelous views of Lake George and we’ll be able to see into 4 nearby states. Next, we will board The Mohican for a relaxing cruise on Lake George where the shoreline is dotted with mansions of the rich and famous of yesteryear and today. A lite box lunch will be served on-board.
After our visit to Lake George, we’ll be off to Saratoga Springs. Once the home of the Mohawks and Algonquins, Saratoga Springs City later became a lumbering village, then a spa resort town with 125 springs. Casinos were added, along with major horse racing. The up-scale village today is also known as a major shopping mecca and college town.
You’ll have dinner tonight at Longfellows – which is located in a barn, but, oh, what a barn. It’s a cross between an Adirondack log cabin and an Italian villa courtyard, complete with an inside pond and waterfalls. (breakfast, lite lunch and dinner included)
October 13th – Here at Lake Placid we get to visit venues where Sonja Henje, Eric Heiden and the U.S. Hockey Team won their Olympic golds at the home of the 1932 and 1980 Olympics. October in upstate New York is remarkably beautiful and we have some scenic driving to enjoy today as we travel west to Auburn, New York (the finger Lakes region).
Built in 1951, Springside Inn is reminiscent of days gone by. This charming historic inn is situated on acres of manicured lawns, with a duck pond and spacious gazebo. Dinner will be served to us ‘family style’ tonight. History also abounds here at the Springside Inn. The back area contains dens where fleeing slaves hid from their pursuers, thanks to the guidance of Harriet Tubman, whose house was only a couple of miles away. Hotel accommodations will be at the Hilton Garden Inn. (breakfast and dinner included)
October 14th – In nearby Seneca Falls we will visit the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and discover how the fight for civil rights changed the world. The Park tells the story of the first Women’s Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, July 19-20, 1848.
Today we will have lunch at the Belhurst Castle, which has been voted one of the most romantic places in New York State. It is located on the shores of deep blue glacier-carved Seneca Lake and has stunning views. You’ll enjoy your time at the Belhurst Castle.
This afternoon we will step back in history as we step on-board our Erie Canal Cruise. We will pass through some of the villages of old, enter a lock, glide past shoreline homes, over a dam and under several bridges, including a drawbridge.
A highlight this evening will be our visit to Luna Island. Luna Island is a small projection of land on the north side of Goat Island, on the Niagara River, and is situated within 3 feet of the American Falls on one side, and Bridal Veil Falls on the other, with the skyline of Niagara Falls, Canada in front of you. The falls are lit up at night in all their glory. This is an unforgettable experience. We’ll overnight in Niagara Falls at the Doubletree by Hilton hotel. (breakfast and lunch included)
October 15th – Hear the crashing waves. See the jaw dropping views. Soak up every drop of powerful spray as we cruise aboard the Maid of the Mist. It’s the only way to experience one of he world’s most amazing natural wonders right here in the U.S.A.
This afternoon we will make our way to the Eastman House and Museum. This is the world’s oldest museum dedicated to photography, and one of the world’s oldest film archives. We will tour the magnificent home of founder George Eastman, which is now a National Historic Landmark. We will savor a Grand Finale Dinner tonight at the hotel. (breakfast and dinner included)
October 16th – After breakfast we will travel to nearby Palmyra, New York and visit historical sights such as the Hill Cumorah, as well as the Visitor’s Center. Down the road we will also have time to visit the Sacred Grove and reflect on the special events that have taken place there. Before our departure from Palmyra we will stop by the Grandin Print Shop, the Smith family farm house and view the Palmyra Temple with its beautiful landscaping.
Then it’s off to the Rochester airport for our late afternoon flight home. (breakfast included)
