Day 1/Monday, August 8th – Our early afternoon nonstop flight will have us arriving in beautiful Seattle. Our first stop will be at the iconic Seattle Space Needle. At a height of 605 feet, the Space Needle has been part of the Seattle skyline since it was unveiled as the centerpiece of the 1962 World’s Fair. A quick 43-second elevator ride will take us to the observation deck at the 520-foot level where we will have panoramas of the city, Puget Sound, and on a clear day, the distant Cascade and Olympic mountains. This is the #1 thing to do on most tourist’s “don’t miss” list. You’ll have some free time here at the Seattle Center which is an arts, entertainment, dining and education campus with the tourists in mind. Later we will check into our comfortable hotel accommodations at the Hampton Inn on the northern end of the metro Puget Sound region where the pace is a little slower and quieter.
Day 2/Tuesday, August 9th – After breakfast today we will travel just a few miles to the Boeing Aircraft Factory. Here we will take a small group tour of this amazing facility to watch aircraft – including 747s, 777s and 787s – taking shape before our eyes. The Boeing facility is the largest building in the world by volume and we be able to witness the highlights of this fascinating facility.
This afternoon we will board the ferry in Anacortes and enjoy a relaxing 19 mile/1 hour ride to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Every ferry ride across the sound brings the promise of adventure, and we have great things planned for your two-night stay on the island. So, say farewell to worry and stress and say hello to the mellow island vibe. The pace is slow, no stoplights, traffic, or box stores. It is a place that is filled with character (and characters), history, natural beauty, quaint bed and breakfasts and small boutique inns. Sit back and relax – you’re on “island time” now! (breakfast included today)
Day 3/Wednesday, August 10th – Our small group will have a private tour of the island visiting many fascinating sights along the way. We’ll stop at a lavender farm (after all, August is the peak of purpleness) and learn how they use and sell everything lavender. We will also pay a visit to Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm which you will find fascinating. Then it’s off to Roche Harbor, a historic seaside resort with beautiful gardens and a picturesque harbor filled with sailboats. Our island tour will continue this afternoon with a stop at the Lime Kiln State Park (also known as Whale Watch Park). So, be on the lookout for Orca and Minke whales all while you are enjoying the lovely scenery. In 1859, Great Britain and the United States both occupied San Juan Island. We’ll visit the San Juan Island National Historical Park which celebrates how nations can resolve disputes without resorting to violence. (Stay tuned, we’ll also learn about the Pig War). Back at our charming island inn, we’ll gather together as a group and enjoy a pizza party in the parklike setting of the hotel. This evening you might want to play lawn games or relax island style in the large outdoor hot tub. What a great day! (continental breakfast and pizza party dinner included today)
Day 4/Thursday, August 11th – This morning we will leave the island life and board the ferry to experience North Cascade National Park. Back on our private motorcoach, we will head east into a vast wilderness of conifer-clad mountains, jagged peaks, deep forested valleys, glaciers, and lakes. In fact, North Cascade National Park has over 300 glaciers, more than any U.S. Park outside of Alaska. After a picnic in the national park, we will enjoy a cruise on the glacier-fed Diablo Lake, where you’ll learn about the surrounding wildlife habitat and enjoy views of snow-clad mountain peaks, islands and cascading waterfalls. Our amazing day will wind down as we settle into our comfortable accommodations in Wenatchee, located on the eastern foothills of the Cascade Range and along the shore of the Columbia River. Wenatchee is known as the “Apple Capital of the World” due to its many valley orchards. (continental breakfast and picnic lunch included)
Day 5/Friday, August 12th – Germany may be off your travel list this summer, but the charming Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth is not! Just a half hour drive from our hotel we will find Leavenworth nestled in the heart of the Cascade Mountain Range. Leavenworth will give you that refreshed feeling just as if you had spent a few days nestled in the Bavarian Alps! With Alpine-style buildings and the stunning craggy mountain backdrop, the town is a real draw with tourists. What’s more, the town thoroughly embraces old-world traditions reminiscent of Germany. So, pack your camera today and get ready for some perfect pictures from your Bavarian summer vacation. After plenty of time in Leavenworth we’ll say auf Wiedersehen (goodbye) and travel down the mountain road and escape to Snoqualmie Falls. This 268-foot waterfall is one of Washington’s most popular scenic attractions. Then it is off to Bellevue (French term meaning “beautiful view”) for a delightful group dinner before checking into the Hampton Inn. (breakfast and dinner included today)
Day 6/Saturday, August 13th – After breakfast we will travel across the world’s longest and widest floating bridge across Lake Washington to get to Seattle. In Seattle, there is no better place to be early in the morning than wandering among the produce, seafood, craft and flower vendors at the Pike Place Market. Noise, crowds and the salmon-flinging antics of the fishmongers aside, the soul of the city is right here at Pike Place Market. Also, the first Starbucks is here at 1912 Pike Place. Before we head to the airport this afternoon, we will take in some more of the popular sights of Seattle on our sightseeing tour. (breakfast included today)
