This coastal drive is packed with nature’s beauty!
Monday, October 25th
Your tour begins with a morning flight from Salt Lake City to San Jose, California (flights from other cities can be arranged). Have your cameras ready as majestic beauty is around almost every corner. We’ll journey down the celebrated 17-Mile Drive, much of which hugs the Pacific coastline and passes famous golf courses, mansions and scenic attractions. We’ll see the Lone Cypress Tree, drive through the Del Monte Forest and then pass on to the gated community of Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach Golf Links is unanimously rated the No. 1 public course in the country.
Pebble Beach has hosted the U.S. Open more times than any other course, and every February hosts the PGA Tour. You’ll have time to check out the stunning beach and famed clubhouse. We will arrive at our hotel, the Monterey Bay/Seaside Embassy Suites, just in time to catch the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. This great day is just the beginning of a fun and scenic tour.
Tuesday, October 26th
After a spectacular breakfast, which Embassy Suites is known for, we will board our motorcoach and travel to the coastal town of Santa Cruz. Just beyond Santa Cruz we will board the Roaring Camp Train for a 90-minute excursion into the Redwood Forest. During the 1880’s, this narrow-gauge stream locomotive used to haul giant redwood logs out of the mountains. Today we’ll travel over trestles, through towering redwood groves and up a winding grade to the summit of Bear Mountain, as conductors narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad and the forest. After our train ride, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in the Redwood State Park.
Then it’s on to Carmel-by-the Sea, which has been dubbed one of the “most romantic cities of the world” by Travel + Leisure magazine. You’ll enjoy free time in this small beach city on the Monterey Peninsula to explore Carmel’s galleries and fairytale cottages and have time to enjoy dinner at one of the many cafés in its village-like center. (breakfast & lunch included)
Wednesday, October 27th
Today you get to travel along the Big Sur Coast for a trip that will surely take your breath away. This section of California State Route 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, is one of the world’s most scenic drives….exhilarating and dramatic, with picture-postcard ocean and coastal vistas that are astonishing. Whale watching is popular in this region at this time of year as the blue and humpback whales are migrating south to a warmer climate to spend the winter months.
Upon your arrival in San Simeon, you will visit one of the world’s greatest showplaces, the palatial mountaintop retreat of Hearst Castle, built by art collector and newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Hearst Castle is an accredited museum and a California State Park. You are in for a treat on a guided tour of this meticulously preserved hilltop estate, where a guide will lead you through the property that took 28 years to complete with its 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, and pools. Be prepared to be amazed. Overnight accommodations will be in the seaside community of Morro Bay. (breakfast and lunch included)
Thursday, October 28th
This morning you just might want to enjoy a stroll along the beach. Late this morning you’ll have a relaxing two-hour drive to Solvang, where Denmark has been recreated with picturesque buildings and windmills. You’ll have time on your own to soak up the atmosphere in this charming village and browse the quaint shops featuring Danish imports, and delight in bakeries filled with rich pastries. You can shop for authentic gifts like wooden shoes, cuckoo clocks and unique clothing. Our accommodations are at the four-star Hotel Corque, which is located right in the heart of this unique village. (breakfast and dinner included)
Friday, October 29th
Solvang looks and smells like Christmas year-round, with twinkling lights and baked goods. We have left this morning free so that you can wander around town and enjoy breakfast at one of the many local bakeries and confectionaries known for tasty traditional Danish breakfasts. This afternoon you’ll find yourself at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. After our days traveling along the Pacific Coast, now you can get up close to the those animals that live along the coast such as sea lions, seals, sharks and more. Be sure to check out the funny penguins!
